NYC celebrity hairdresser Josue Perez, who has styled Hollywood royalty like Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz and Sarah Jessica Parker, suggests relying on the low chignon as a go-to for your clients during this upcoming holiday season stretch.
“Face framing chignon buns are a perfect and classic look appropriate for any holiday party—from the office party to gift swaps to New Year’s Eve,” says Josue, a brand ambassador for Rowenta Beauty. So whether you’re styling a matriarch for a family Thanksgiving dinner or an ingenue to watch the ball drop at Times Square, the timeless, ageless chignon is a great choice. It’s up to you and your client to decide whether to class it up, scale it down or rock it out!
The look is a staple on the red carpet, with actresses Jessica Alba and pre-pixie Jennifer Lawrence rockin’ it regularly.
Earlier this month, Taylor Swift wore a low chignon to this year’s CMAs,
while actress Emily Osment did the same at the L.A. premiere of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Across the pond, Kate Middleton is a big fan of the chignon, whether simple and smooth or ornately braided.
Josue Perez shares the steps he used for fashioning this look for actress Rosario Dawson.
STEP 1: Create soft waves and curl the ends of the hair with the Rowenta Versa Style Iron, which will protect the hair against damage.
STEP 2: Establish a heavy side part, and pull hair low and slightly to the side, leaving some hair loose on the opposite side.
STEP 3: Twist the hair into a bun, and hold securely with bobby pins.
