1. Review Face Mapping Consultation Card, checking for contraindications. Begin by removing eye and lip make-up with Soothing Eye Make-Up Remover. For stubborn eye make-up, use PreCleanse on damp cotton.

2. Perform Double Cleanse, beginning with PreCleanse. Perform second cleanse under steam with Skin Resurfacing Cleanser, adding a few drops of Replenishing Botanical Mixer. Remove with a warm steam towel or sponges, customizing rinsing water with Replenishing Botanical Mixer.

3. Perform Face Mapping. Look for areas of premature aging, hyper- and hypo-pigmentation, general signs of sun damage, irregular skin texture and check hydration levels. Note moles, freckles or irregular skin tissue to check during follow-up treatments. Discuss with client the length of time that these manifestations have been present and his/her sun-protection regimen.

4. Twist open one applicator tube of MultiVitamin Power Exfoliant. For coarse, sun-damaged skin, use steam with MultiVitamin Power Exfoliant for four to seven minutes. For more sensitive skin, avoid steam and reduce time. One pump of Exfoliant Accelerator 35 may be added for increased activity. Note: Apply a thin layer of Collodial Masque Base over the lip and eye areas if needed.

5. Dispense onto hands, spread product between hands and massage with fingertips over face, neck and chest with light, circular movements, focusing on areas of dryness, lines and wrinkles.

6. Perform fingertip rotations on any area where the client may be experiencing a slight tingling sensation or mild sensitivity to dissipate the feeling. MultiVitamin Power Exfoliant can be used around the eye area. Constantly assess the client’s skin throughout this step, and never leave client unattended while exfoliant is on the skin.

7. Dampen gauze with cold water to remove MultiVitamin Power Exfoliant. Follow with PreCleanse, then a second cleanse with Special Cleansing Gel. Remove PreCleanse with a steam towel customized with Replenishing Botanical Mixer.

8. Perform inhalations on client with Replenishing Botanical Mixer. Follow by pressing six drops of AGE smart Complex on the skin. Apply two drops of Revitalizing Additive to the skin, then perform Dermalogica’s Energizing Massage for the face for 10 minutes.

9. Apply a thin layer of MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque over face, neck and eye area. Additional AGE smart Complex can be pressed into the skin prior to that, if necessary.

10. Cover face and neck with gauze, tenting over the nose and mouth area, dampened with Antioxidant HydraMist.

11. Apply Contour Masque with a spatula over entire face and neck, including the eye area, for a soothing/firming eye treatment. Optional: If you need to limit the total treatment time to 60 minutes, this step can be simplified by applying AGE smart Complex followed by MultiVitamin Power Recovery Masque. Remove after 10 minutes.

12. Complete by spritzing with Antioxidant HydraMist, then applying MultiVitamin Power Firm around eyes and on lip area. Finish with Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30 for solar protection. Layer Super Rich Repair or Power Rich underneath the Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30 if additional hydration is required.

Age Smart Professional Treatment

At the end of 2006, Robert LaMorte, co-owner of three Chicago-area locations of Robert Jeffrey Hair and Skin Care Studio, approached two long-time employees about opening a fourth, in the trendy Lincoln Park neighborhood in Chicago. Jodi Paul, employee of LaMorte since graduating cosmetology school 20 years ago, and Jeanette Kemble, a client turned employee since 1997, jumped at the opportunity to co-own their own location. A year later, in December 2007, they opened and began welcoming in a diverse group of clients that range from college students in their late teens and early 20s to professionals in their late 40s and 50s. To mimic the feel of the neighborhood, the duo designed an airy, light and welcoming space. “We wanted to keep our finishes upscale, similar to the high-end luxury condos that were being built above us,” says Kemble. So they went straight to the source, using the condo contractor’s granite provider and cabinetmaker for the countertops and cabinets in both the salon and skin care sections.

As first-time owners, Paul says their biggest challenge so far has been introducing skin care to people who normally don’t use it. “We’re trying to get people on a regular system of facials and upgrading their skin care so they’re not buying it from a pharmacy,” she says. With the economy slumping, Kemble says it has been even more of a challenge. “People view getting a facial as a luxury item, and they tend to spend more money on hair first.”

To counteract the challenges, Paul and Kemble have introduced special promotions. The latest was designed to bring hair clients in for skin care, offering them a 20-minute special eye treatment for $25, instead of the regular $40. Signs were also posted on mirrors in the salon, touting the availability of skin care and waxing. “A lot of people who come in for hair don’t know we do both, so we’re trying to promote within the existing clientele,” says Kemble.

Their use of Dermalogica is a selling point, too. “It’s a clean line that works well for a broad range of people,” says Kemble. “It’s also simple; a client could buy two or three things and be set for beginning a facial regime.” The facial treatments are also customizable for the diverse clientele. “Definitely the most popular treatment is the custom facial,” says Paul. “There are a variety of facials and a variety of ways to customize them.”

Rather than focusing solely on the results of skin aging—like wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and loss of elasticity—the new AGE Smart anti-aging line from Dermalogica is designed to prevent the biological triggers that lead to those changes in the first place. The complete 11-piece line also treats the visible signs of aging, with products that include Antioxidant HydraMist to hydrate, MAP-15 Regenerator to improve clarity and firmness, MultiVitamin Power Concentrate to strengthen and MultiVitamin Thermofoliant to refine texture.
