Chicago Talent
Originally from Puerto Rico, Luz Segovia came to the U.S. at age 14 and began her cosmetology training at American Beauty School in Chicago four years later. “I went to visit a beauty school with my sister-in-law. She was the one interested in attending, but she never went—I did. I thought it was a fascinating world.” Currently serving as first vice president of Cosmetologists Chicago, Segovia looks forward to becoming the organization’s president in October. Citing the Chicago Midwest Beauty Show’s move to McCormick Place in 2008 and the plans underway for Chicago to host HairWorld, Segovia says that as president she’ll concentrate her efforts on “recognizing international talent, especially Latin-Americans,” because of her own heritage. A professionally licensed hairdresser since 1970, she opened her Chicago salon, Segovia, at its first address in 1978. Now in its third location, the full-service salon (hair, skin and body care) is expanding and by the end of the summer will increase in staff size from nine to 15 employees. “I love to work with people,” Segovia says of her driving force and the passion that continues to play out in her life. “I like to make every day a happy day for those who come into the salon—to give them a great experience. The beauty industry has taken me to places I’d never dreamed of—I’ve traveled, met people, and grown professionally and as a person.”
