Stuart Gavert Shares a Client Checklist for Summer Color Care.
A bottle of Pellegrino, a wooden paddle brush and a little conditioner are all hair needs to stay healthy this summer, says Stuart Gavert, master colorist and owner of Gavert Atelier Salon in Beverly Hills.
“Summer is more harmful to the hair because of environmental damage caused by UVA and UVB rays and interaction with harsh pool chemicals like chlorine and algaecide,” says Stuart, whose clients include Christina Applegate, Kathy Hilton, Christine Lahti and Emily Blunt.
“It is important for us to remind our clients to avoid exposing hair to these elements, even though is not always easy or fun. There are several simple solutions they can employ to avoid fading, damage, or ghastly green locks!”
Tip 1: When clients head to the beach, tell them to take sparkling water. Wash hair with Pellegrino (also helps make a great after beach cocktail!) after stepping out of the ocean to refresh sandy tresses. Stuart says the bubbles in sparkling water work even faster then shampoo and remove salt water quicker than plain water.
Tip 2: Two must-carry products for the beach bag: a spray-in moisturizer that protects hair from summer sun damage while moisturizing and detangling, and a wooden paddle brush. Tell clients to use the paddle brush before they go in the water instead of after—they will avoid nasty split ends and breakage.
Tip 3: Use the sun as a conditioning aid. Tell clients to apply your chosen conditioning oil or treatment before they go out for a day in the sun and clip back their hair. The heat of the sun will intensify the moisturizing action. When the client gets home, she can simply apply a color-care shampoo and rinse out, then add a moisturizing conditioner to get healthy hair that is free from summer-frizzies.
