Our Twitter followers answered the question:

At what age do you think it’s appropriate to start coloring/highlighting a young client?

@PlaidfuzzIcon I put a few natural highlights in my daughter’s hair even before she started kindergarten.
@Littlemissjacko 13! I hate when parents drop off their 10-yr.-old little girls at the salon and leave them. The older the wiser, I say.
@Reneezelle Our salon accepts children 12 and over. I have started some at age 9, very natural highlights. Hair is an accessory & we make $$$.
@HairGirlDenver 12 I think is a good age for highlights however don’t know if I will wait that long with my daughter ;)
@Jordanalorraine Like make-up, I think it should start subtly, naturally. A few highlights in mid-teens. Permanent, on-scalp color not before 16.
@digitalicecreamIcon When the young client is old enough to pay for the service themselves.
@Trayc20 I started Junior year of high school, and never stopped :)
