Grey’s, Idol and Pirates—Hollywood Hair in NYC

Just got back from an amazingly cool press event.  Joico gathered up some phenomenal talent to launch three new K-Pak items: K-Pak Hair Repair System for both in salon and at home as well as the new Vero K-Pak Color System and the new K-Pak Sun Therapy. We’ll fill you in on all the details of the products in upcoming issues.

But meanwhile, you would not believe the heavyweights Joico brought in to “share their thoughts” about the products. We all met at the transformed Devachan Salon on the corner of Broome and Crosby in Soho in NYC.

First of all, if you don’t know them, Joico has two incredible artistic directors…Sue Pemberton for color and Damien Carney for cut and style. I’ve shot with both in studio and these are two of the most talented artists out there. Each filled us in on the benefits of the products while the crowd of 50 or so editors and industry bigwigs chomped on yummy cheese puffs, filet mignon and truffles.

EVEN BETTER…..Joico had the smarts to bring in some high-profile artists to share their love of the line. First on the podium was Sean Flanigan, the on-set hairdresser for Grey’s Anatomy, that television show with the Doctor McDreamy guy. He told us that he and his team of four hairdressers create the looks for up to 25 characters each day. The day starts early for Mr. Sean and ends quite late. A lot of work, but a great gig.

Next on stage was Dean Banowetz. That’s right….Dean, the guy who does all the American Idol people. (He’ll be profiled on the back page of your December Modern.) I am a HUGE fan of AI and always in awe of the talented crew that transform these Idol wanna-bes….many of whom don’t know a hair extension from an extension cord.

Finally Martin Samuel jumped on stage to share the challenges of doing the hair for Pirates of the Caribbean. As the lead hairdresser for the movie, he created those amazing looks for Johnny Depp and Keira Knightly which had to endure crazy weather, hot lights, huge physical ordeals, etc. etc. etc.  Each of these guys was so cool, so nice and so approachable.  It was a great press event…..I wish you all could have been there.
