Rodney Cutler on Razor Cutting

Maggie Mulhern | March 23, 2012 | 10:24 AM

Rodney Cutler, an ambassador for Ulta and Redken, has been using a razor on many of his shorter haircuts to create the perfect texture. “I use a reverse technique,” he says. “It’s a great way to see the cut as it unfolds before you.” Cutler points out that it’s important to keep the hair just slightly damp, not saturated. “I rarely use a water bottle,” he says. “I watch the hair during the cut to see how it moves naturally.” Sections are elevated and the razor is used in a sliding technique, pushing the hair from underneath.  Says Cutler, “It’s a perfect technique to get lots of movement.”
