Home care is a not-to-be-missed topic for estheticians that perform waxing services; not only is it good for your retail sales, it’s also good for your business and for your clients. By providing them with the products and education they need between services, you establish yourself as the expert.

But so many estheticians are not taking advantage of this captive audience. “Ninety-five percent of new clients have told me they get in-grown hair or rashes, and if I ask them if they know how to take care of their skin between waxing, they say no,” says Shala Dveirin, esthetician, educator and founder of Rehab, an at-home care kit for post-hair removal. “A lot of clients think that is the way it is, but people don’t have to have those problems. We provide the best waxing we can, but we need to take it a step further and educate them on skin care down there.” Here are the three steps to teach your clients so they achieve the best results from their wax.

The first step in a proper care regimen is calming, soothing and healing the area that has been waxed to diminish redness and irritation. Dveirin recommends using a pure aloe vera-based product.

Secondly, clients should manually exfoliate the area daily in the shower. Besides lifting off dead skin cells, it loosens the hair follicle, preventing ingrowns and helping to alleviate the discomfort of waxing the next time around.

The last step is prevention. Once a day, clients should apply a bump-preventing product that cools and heals, with salicylic or lactic acids to exfoliate.

In each issue, waxing expert Shala Dveirin will be offering up tips, advice and techniques on everything related to waxing and hair removal. She’ll also be answering your questions in each edition of the monthly Renew Reports: Skin Care newsletter. To sign-up for the newsletter, go here.
