After one look at the slinky, black Badgley Mischka gown chosen by Golden Globes Best Actress Gina Rodriguez, her “mane” man—Joico Celebrity Stylist Paul Norton — knew just what to do.

“The dress had such a classic, ‘old Hollywood,’ feeling,” reports Paul. We were inspired to channel legendary stars like Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner and Jayne Mansfield. So we created romantic, shiny, classic waves that were ideal for the off-the-shoulder style of the gown.”

STEP 1: To create the look for the star of Jane the Virgin, Paul first advised Gina to shampoo with Joico Color Balance Blue Shampoo and Conditioner to remove all traces of unwanted warmth from a few previous highlights.

STEP 2: On damp hair, he applied Joico JoiWhip Firm Hold Design Foam to create a strong foundation for what promised to be a long evening, and used a medium boar bristle brush to blow dry the hair.

STEP 3: Once the hair was completely dry, he subdivided it into three large horizontal sections and, beginning at the bottom, misted each section with Joico IronClad Thermal Protectant Spray.

STEP 4: Next he used a 1 ¼-inch curling iron to curl two-inch subsections of hair, securing each one with large clips. He worked from bottom to top, and once he reached the top section, he created a deep, glamorous side part and directed the hair away from the face.

STEP 5: Once all of the hair was curled and clipped, he misted the hair with Joico JoiMist Medium Styling and Finishing Spray as it set and cooled.  “Allowing the set to cool completely ensures that the curls will form properly,” Paul explains.  Once the hair was cool, he removed the clips, and invited Gina to rest her head on the back of a chair, so that her hair fell freely over the top of the chair.  This enabled Paul to vigorously rake through the lengths with his fingers to blend the curls.

STEP 6: Next, he applied a dime-sized amount of Joico Crème Wax Texture and Shine to the palm of his hand, emulsified and began working it into the hair, roots to ends, as he placed and molded the final wave formation.  “I paid close attention to her facial structure so that every wave moved in the most flattering way possible,” Paul comments.

STEP 7: Once the waves began taking shape to his satisfaction, he inserted large metal hair pins to set the wave shapes, while brushing through the opposite side with a Mason Pearson styling brush and securing the section close to the head with bobby pins.

STEP 8: Finally, he removed the pins and applied his finishing touches – Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Finishing Spray to ensure long-lasting hold, and a quick application of Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Dry Oil Spray for trophy-winning shine!
