MTV’s Video Music Awards are synonymous with celebrities showing their wildest, most daring looks, and this year was no different. But among the craziness, plenty of stars’ style, makeup and, of course, hair shined.

COPPER QUEEN:

HOLLAND RODEN:

“Who wouldn’t want to turn heads with this amazing balanced copper?” says Samantha Manuzak of the Ulta Beauty Artistic Team. “It allows you to be ultra-glamorous without the shock value of an orange parking cone.” To recreate actress Holland Roden’s look, Manuzak would use Redken color for the base, and create shine and subtle dimension with babylights foiling to allow a Shades EQ glaze to pop.

CARAMEL MACCHIATO:

KAT GRAHAM:

Using a traditional partial highlight sectioning technique, to recreate actress Kat Graham’s look, Matrix Artistic Director Victor Mendoza, would apply babylights in a diagonal sectioning. “Feather your formula into the new growth for a more natural and seamless result,” Mendoza says. “When doing your foils on the crown, consider the natural parting of the client. Using a babylights technique will give you more natural and subtle results, no heavy line of demarcation.”

AQUAMARINE DREAM:

HALSEY:
Rocky Vitelli, CHI Global Artistic Board Member, says prelightening the hair with the blondest blonde and 20-volume is the best way to recreate musician Halsey’s finish. “Then, add three parts Chromashine Blue with one part Chromashine Yellow with 4 parts of CHI Color Lock Conditioner for 15 min and rinse,” he says.
