The results are in! Pravana has announced the winners of this year’s Show Us Your Vivids Contest. From July 1 to Sept. 30, 2015, over 500 students and stylists entered their brightest, head-turning color creations using Pravana Vivids haircolor for a chance to win their own editorial photo shoot in Los Angeles and a multi-page feature in a national magazine.

This year’s judging panel included Pravana Guest Artist and celebrity stylist Danny Moon of Andy Lecompte Salon, Vadre Grigsby, Pravana Artistic Color Director and James Gartner, Pravana Guest Artist. This year’s winners embodied the spirit of Pravana by showcasing beautiful haircolor using ChromaSilk Vivids combined with exceptional techniques, creative and polished styling and superb overall impact.

MODERN has the how-to for the first place winner, Erica Keelen (@ericakeelen_hair_love) of Jacksonville, Florida. See below the judges comments.

Judges Feedback:

"This color combination required different levels of lift to achieve the vibrancy we see here. The pre-Vivids application work on this model, that would typically go unnoticed, was done perfectly. If it weren’t for the precision in the lightening process, the finished color would not have its seamless look." -Vadre Grigsby, PRAVANA Artistic Color Director

“I love how she related it to her art inspiration [Picasso’s Starry Night] and showcased the final look with more than one style.” -Danny Moon, PRAVANA Guest Artist

“Perfectly melted colors, strategic placement and a wise model/photographer made this a number one choice for me.” -James Gartner, PRAVANA Guest Artist

How-to:

  1. Hair was first shampooed with Pravana Pure Light Sulfate-free Brightening Shampoo and toned with Pravana ChromaSilk 10BV and Pravana Zero Lift Developer. The hair was then blow-dried completely.
  2. Beginning in the nape and back corner sections, below the occipital bone, Teal (see formula below) was painted at the root area 1 ½” down melting into Marina Blue (see formula below) through the mid-shaft then melting into Daybreak Violet (see formula below) at the ends.
  3. Next, the back and side sections below the parietal were colored from one side of the head to the other to ensure a consistent shine line. In each paper, the base color of Daybreak Violet melted into Marina Blue into teal, into a shine line of Lemongrass (see formula below) into Teal, into Marina Blue and finished at the ends with Daybreak Violet. The length of each color increasing as I worked higher through the sections to preserve the consistent transition. This technique with the corresponding color pattern was recreated through the top sides and crown areas.
  4. After processing 30 minutes, the hair was shampooed with Pravana Vivids Color Protect Shampoo and Conditioner.
  5. The hair was blow-dried and styled utilizing Pravana Silk Degrees Shine Serum and Pravana Super Shape Hairspray.

Jenn Malone (@jmalonehair) at Agence Salon, San Dimas, California, says her client "had 85% virgin hair. Her goal is to be a 'rooty' platinum blonde while still keeping the 'lived in' look. My main goal was to get her to her desired color, while still maintaining the integrity of her hair. Patience is the key in achieving this!" How to here.
