MODERN asked stylists to upload their favorite color transformations on Instagram using #modernsalon and #modernpick me for the chance to win a salon-inspired piece of art and t-shirt with the same design on it by our friend and artist Barbara Black. The only parameters was that we wanted to see BRIGHT, VIVID work that represented our October issue's theme of "Mad About Hue." We got so many incredible submissions numbering in the thousands, but stylist Ricardo Santiago stole the show with his Chroma Chameleon makeover on his client, Crystal.

Crystal started with half an inch of natural Level 8 outgrowth, then in bands she had two inches of store-bought red (Level 6), two-to-three inches of Level 2, then a mix of reds and coppers through the ends, approximately Level 6. Yikes! Here's his process for tranforming her:

Step 1. "To remove as much color as possible, I used Joico's Base Breaker to break up the dye molecules, three times consecutively, which resulted in about 2-3 Levels of lift," he says.

Step 2. "After that I did a full lightening using Joico VeroLight and 30-Volume with Olaplex," he says. That lifted her to a Level 7 in the dark areas and a Level 9 everywhere else.

Step 3. "Next, I dried her hair and applied a mix of Joico Vero KPak Color 3n+ a touch of 5g at the base to create a 'root shade' or 'stretched root' and then melted that into a mix of custom formulations of Joico Color Intensity in three formulations: 1. Light Purple/Indigo/Clear 2. Peacock Green. 3. Cobalt Blue/Clear," he says. "I alternated vertical sections and used my Embee Meche."

After nine hours of color correcting, client Crystal had a new, oh-so-vivid transformation! "This look, specifically to the color placement, was intended to be very dimensional, every 'hair flip' would reveal a different look!" Santiago says. We love!
