3 Tips for a Short-Hair Consultation

Lauren Quick | July 14, 2014 | 1:43 PM

Going short is a whole new world for many clients, so a thorough consultation is key before making the big chop.

"Short hair is not for everyone, so take the time to clarify expectations as well as styling habits and lifestyle," says Carrin Caracciolo from Di Rosa Haircare in New York. "Guests will no longer be able to rely on a bun or ponytail, and it definitely takes more time to style short hair, and that just might not fit into everyone's schedule."

Clarify expectations with three key elements to see if your client is ready to go short.

3 Tips for a Short-Hair Consultation1. TRUST

Even if your client is determined she's ready for it, it's up to you to figure out if he or she actually is. Ask a lot of questions and be a good listener. If you cut it off and it turns out it was not the time, you're going to be the bad guy.

2. FACE SHAPE

Paramount in any style but especially shorter ones is that the length must be ideal, flatter the face and accentuate the best features. Make sure you choose the right variation on short for you guest.

3. STYLING

Although it can be time-consuming, make sure you educate your guest on the proper brush, styling tools and techniques to use with the new cut. If you don't, the style won't live up to expectations. Bonus points for showing multiple ways to style (i.e. curly or smoothed).
