Antoinette Beenders, Aveda Global Creative Director, has created Clown Couture, a new personal collection blending both couture and circus aesthetics and inspired by hard working, creative circus troupes – the original nomads.

“My life is like a circus!” says Beenders. “I was heavily influenced by the circus and high fashion for my evening performance at NOMAD: Aveda Congress 2013 and I wanted to take that concept to the next level and turn it into a personal collection that is very close to my heart.”

With a strong black and white focus with lots of textures, layers and bursts of color to keep it unexpected and playful, Beenders says that Clown Couture is as the circus should be and comes complete with a ring master, a happy clown and an assortment of other entertainers and characters. The overall photographic aesthetic is influenced by older forms of analogue photography – the colors, the grain, the blur all lend a heart and soul to the imagery that is very dramatic.

Individual hair looks in the collection prominently feature black and white colors including miniature triangular pieces of black and white tape placed onto the hair like a form fitting cap. The same technique using the pieces of tape was used to dye white triangular shapes into a graphic black bob. Black glossy sequins adorn the front of another look creating a liquid like effect on asymmetrical corseted ponytails brought forward and pinned in place around the face.
