We’re not talking about the band when we suggest eating red hot chili peppers! A new study indicates they may cut your risk of death by 13%. Published by Plos One, the study found that participants who ate chili peppers added an average of 18 years to their life, due most prominently to a lower risk of vascular conditions like stroke and heart disease. Various other research studies also have shown that the ingredient capsaicin, which gives the peppers their spicy taste, helps the body to process fat in a way that causes weight loss.

You can add chili pieces, flakes or sauce to lots of recipes, but here’s a simple way to prepare them to eat on their own, from whatscookingamerica.net:

  1. Place chili peppers on a baking sheet and broil 3 to 5 minutes on each side until blackened. Remove from oven.
  2. Place the hot roasted chile peppers in a bowl, cover with plastic wrap or an air-tight lid and allow to steam for 10 minutes.
  3. Remove chile peppers and enjoy!
