The American Crew All-Star Challenge highlights the outstanding world class talents in men’s grooming. The competition combines the art and science of men’s grooming and creating authentic style – the cut, the model and the photograph – to deliver the ultimate interpretation of the American Crew man.

Fifteen finalists recently competed in Brussels with two days of competition photo shoots on May 4 and 5, during which each cut and styled their model, then worked with American Crew Founder David Raccuglia to shoot and select the photo that would represent their final look. Adam Mir of the UK was announced as the American Crew 2016-2017 All-Star Challenge Global Winner on May 8th in a joint event with Revlon Style Masters.

Meet the British winner, Adam Mir.

Describe your professional career path.

When I was 15 years old I started cutting my friends’ and family’s hair in my kitchen as a hobby. I taught myself the basic techniques of barbering and then I realized that I wanted to be a barber. I enrolled myself into Sheffield College and gained NVQ level 2 in barbering. After qualifying I worked in many barbershops, gaining experience and a variety of skills and techniques. I also owned my own business working by myself, and I soon realized I much preferred working within a team. In 2012, I started at Taylor Taylor barbers where I completed my NVQ level 3 in barbering. Since then I have done numerous American Crew training courses including Method 1, which enabled me to broaden my skills even further. I am now the training coordinator for Taylor Taylor, teaching all staff members; from beginners to advanced level training.

What do you love most about being a stylist?

There’s very few jobs that offer the opportunity to meet and interact with such a variety of people, from all walks of life every day. Every client that sits in my chair will ask for a different style cut, and I continuously face different challenges which keeps it enjoyable and exciting. I love that barbering is also a skill that you can take anywhere you go.

How has the American Crew™ brand influenced the way you view men’s grooming?

Before I was introduced to the American Crew brand my barbering was very limited. American Crew has improved my level of skill tremendously, making me think more about shape and movement throughout the hair and how the hair can be influenced through different cutting techniques.

What does the American Crew™ All-Star Challenge mean to you?

It’s a chance for barbers to showcase their talent and receive recognition for their hard work. I’ve been in the industry for a while, so to be given the chance to represent the UK and show off my work is a brilliant opportunity and honor. American Crew All-Star Challenge is a prestigious worldwide event, it’s amazing to be a part of it!

What advice would you give to anyone looking to pursue a career as a stylist?

You have to love what you do! It’s not an easy industry to get into, especially as a junior, but in the end it’ll be worth it!
