Stars have taken a shine to showing off baubles and bling in their hairstyles. Vintage necklaces, brooches and headpieces were most recently seen on the red carpet at the prestigious Met Ball, a gala occasion for Hollywood's biggest names (see photos below). Pearls, rhinestones and gems were spotted sparkling in updos, with demi styles, pinned back on sides and worn headband-style on loose hair.

There's no doubt that extra dazzle adds a little something to formal occasion hair, so suggest it to clients for prom, wedding and black tie events this season. But there are some rules to wearing hair jewelry, says David Lopez, a session and celebrity hair stylist based in New York City. Ask yourself these questions:

1. How much "bling" does the dress already have? If the garment they're wearing is already full of sparkle, a more modest piece is the way to go.

2. Is your client wearing any jewelry? Try to select a piece that would complement any of the accessories she might be wearing. Pay special attention to the color or shade of the jewels or diamonds.

3. How is the hair being styled? This will determine how big or small the hair jewelry you help choose will be. The simpler the hair style, the more creative and fun your hair jewelry can be.

For an off-the-shoulder hairstyle worn with a strapless dress, a larger statement piece of hair jewelry like a flower or large crystal brooch fits best, recommends David Barron, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Barron's London Salon in Atlanta. If the client is wearing looser weaves or a soft half-up do, then "more delicate pieces of hair jewelry, like headbands or crystal hair extensions, will make the best statement." Whatever you do, avoid making the mistake of adding too much hair jewelry to an elaborate hairstyle. Explains Barron, "The hairstyle and jewelry will compete and neither the get a chance to make a statement."

Want a foolproof style that looks great with a little bling? Lopez loves soft waves gently tucked away on one side with a jeweled comb. To do: First, make a side part (use the top arch of the eyebrow as a guide) and create soft waves by wrapping large one-inch sections around the barrel of your curling iron (Lopez likes FHI Heat Kore). Gently brush out and use your jeweled hairpiece to tuck the opposite side of your part behind your ear.
