Day 2: Business, Texture, Education and Runway Shots at ABS

So let me fill you in on what’s been going on at America’s Beauty Show for the past couple days.

At the end of Day 1 I had the opportunity to attend the Chicago premiere of Vidal Sassoon The Movie at the Cadillac Palace Theater. The showing was absolutely beautiful. The movie highlighted Sassoon’s career through the generations, his accomplishments and his personal life—it was a side to Vidal that normally most of us don’t know about or see. If you get the chance to see the movie yourself, you are in for a treat.

Day 2 of America’s Beauty Show was a madhouse—there were A LOT more people who attended yesterday—it literally felt like we were cattle being herded through the isles. But with more people, there was definitely more energy, and the live shows and education were in full swing!

Other than on the show floor, I attended the 2011 America’s Beauty Show Business Forum: Smart Thinking, Straight Talk presented by P&G Salon Professional and Salon Today. Attendees were able to listen in on how they could create opportunities and action steps that can maximize their salon businesses.

The forum was moderated by SALON TODAY’S one and only, Editor-in-Chief Stacey Soble, and John Moroney, plus there was an appearance by CEO P&G Salon Professional’s Reuben Carranza, a presentation by Mark Komanecy, P&G Shopper Based Design, and then a panel of salon experts and beauty editors from magazine’s like Allure, Today’s Chicago Woman, Marie Claire and Self! Stay tuned the next couple days to where you will be able to see the extended coverage of the event.

Following the Business Forum, was the Texture! event in classroom #W-183A. This one-of-a-kind presentation from 1:30 to 3;30 p.m. was packed with all kinds of curly haired information from a panel of experts including: John Benedetto, Director of Education for GK Hair; Shari Harbinger, "The Go To Curl Gurl"; Ouidad, the "Queen of Curl"; Anthony Dickey; Veronique Morrison; Erica Grabczyk and Ana Daniel, Artistic Director & Educator for Ouidad.

At the event there was a panel discussion that focused on the curly haired industry, and how each of these experts view curly hair and their opinions on how to properly cut, care and style textured hair. After a short Q&A session, the presentation transitioned into a workshop where people could go around the room and see LIVE hair demos from the experts themselves.

Shari demonstrates on a curly haired client how to properly style her hair.

Anthony Dickey talks to a group of salon professionals listening in on the demonstration.

Mizani demonstration on a twisting technique

For example, Anthony Dickey showcased his Flat Twist technique, which is a simple way to set the hair. Veronique Morrison and Mizani showed attendees techniques for twisting, braiding and caring for dreadlocks; Shari demonstrated the Deva Curl Three Step, while Ana Daniel and Erica Grabczyk focused more on model cutting.

The MODERN SALON booth yesterday was action packed too! We were giving away CHI flatirons and Brigg Van Osten even stopped by to sign Salon Today's for fans!

To top of a wonderful and busy day at ABS, was The Inspiring World of Redken Runway show at the Vibe in Chicago! What a great time! There was an impressive turn out of people and guests were snapping photos EVERYWHERE! I had to dig through the crowd just to get these shots for all of you. Check them out below:

Well, now I’m off to another busy day! I will keep you all updated on show coverage in my next blog so stay tuned!
