In high-end Yorkville, a neighborhood of Toronto that's about a mile and a half around, 103 salons and spas are doing business. It's a desirable area for a salon: foot traffic is high, and so are the price points, plus Prada, Gucci and Dolce are your neighbors. But, there's a lot of competition, too. We talked to two salons on opposite ends of one street—one opened two years ago, the other, almost 42 years ago—to find out their secrets to surviving and thriving in a crowded marketplace.

I don't really have the words to express how much, as a teen, I loved the original Beverly Hills, 90210.
I wanted to rock Kelly Taylor's hairstyles, although unfortunately as a
brunette with thick, wavy hair, those weren't the ones that really
suited me. Nonetheless, she was my favorite.

It hasn't been a great day for magazines. This morning, media giant Conde Nast announced that they were closing four magazines, including Gourmet, which has been published for almost 70 years, and Modern Bride. This afternoon brought word that Questex Media, the parent company of American Salon and Spa and the IBS shows, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
