How to Get Hues that Pop

It’s going to be a bright and sunny summer—if the nail colors of celebs on the red carpet are any indication. At movie premieres and award shows, stars are showing up with shades way beyond the pale. Celebrity nail artist Kimmie Kyees, who lacquered up Katy Perry for the MTV Movie Awards, tells us how to achieve the best and brightest shades.

“It’s a good trend for summer,” says Kyees. “You’re coming out of the darks and it’s time for brights. Eye-popping nail color is an amazing accessory.” For Perry’s nails, the color was picked by Katy herself, based on a pair of yellow jeans hanging in the dressing room. Twilight star Kristen Stewart was also seen on the red carpet rocking a bright blue.

“The trick with neon is to put a white color down first. Then when you layer the bright color on top, it gives them that highlighter-bright, instead of more milky,” says Kyees. White can be spotty depending on how it applies, so she recommends laying down two coats of white, followed by one coat of color—two if needed. To show clients the difference the white makes, she puts the color on one of her own nails with and without the base.

Ready to try it out? Kyees favorite colors right now include vibrant purple-pink and all shades of green, from lime to emerald.
