I RECENTLY ATTENDED the American Association of Cosmetology Schools (AACS) Convention in Phoenix. For those of you who haven’t attended this event before, you’d probably be more than a bit surprised.
Given that schools are the lifeblood of our industry—training our next generation of stylists, owners and entrepreneurs—it amazes me how uninvolved with the school market so many members of the industry are. But for anyone attending the conference, it was clear that AACS is doing their part to ensure their member schools are well prepared to provide future talent.
• The trade show featured education and products from many of the industry’s key players.
• The conference included dozens of presentations from government regulations to technology best practices to “what students are really thinking” (presented by our own First Chair editor and recent beauty school graduate Alison Shipley).
• And the highlight of the weekend was the Beauty Changes Lives presentation, featuring cutting-edge style and top industry talent such as P&G Salon Professional’s Fabio Sementelli, celebrity stylist and Mitch spokesperson Diana Schmidtke and royal hairdresser Richard Dalton.
Beauty Changes Lives is an advocacy program launched by AACS with the goal of transforming how our industry is perceived—both by ourselves and by others. And recognizing the impact our industry has not only on our lives, but on the lives of those we touch.
As quickly as our world is changing transformation seems to be less an option than a requirement. With many of us thinking about our New Year’s resolutions, it’s very appropriate to consider what form our own transformations take. What is my road to being a better person, a better friend, or a better business partner?
In the digital/social media era, where our public face and our private face overlap more and more, it’s apparent that doing the right thing is good both personally and professionally.
Beauty Changes Lives seeks to transform the perception of who we are. And every new day is a chance to transform the reality.
