In honor of this month’s royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton, we spoke to Princess Diana’s former hairdresser, Richard Dalton. Currently, Dalton lives in Laguna Beach, California, does fashion photography, is spokesperson for Samson Hair Restoration and is the US Ambassador for Philip Martin’s Organic Base Hair Color (philipmartins.it).

About Me

Born and raised: In a tiny village south of Edinburgh in the Lammermoor Hills called Fala in Scotland.

My hair right now: Samson hair restoration, was very long last week and it’s short this week.

The coolest look I ever created: Twelve years styling Diana, Princess of Wales, nearly every day—every look was cool.

The best thing about my job is: The people and being a therapist.

The best job I ever had as a hairdresser: My time spent looking after Princess Diana and traveling the world with her.

If I hadn’t become a hairdresser I would have: There was nothing else I wanted to do. There was never any other option than hairdresser.

My best vacation: My birthday at Angus Mitchell’s house in Hawaii.

People would be surprised to learn: The two loves of my life are my West Highland Terriers.

I would love to meet: Lady Gaga.

My favorite trend ever: My disco days.

I am inspired by: Old Hollywood glamour.

I became a hairdresser because: I always wanted to be a hairdresser and was inspired by the work of Alexandre de Paris. I dreamed of traveling the world with a fabulous client and my dream came true in meeting and looking after the world’s most photographed woman, Princess Diana.

Richard is the son of Mum's cousin Nell and her husband Ronnie. I believe that, when he was hair stylist to the Princess of Wales, Diana made a surprise appearance at their house on one of her journeys north of the border.
