Interview with Jane Iredale, Founder of Iredale Mineral Cosmetics

How have you seen your company grow? Apart from growing domestically, we’ve also grown internationally so that we now sell our products into almost 50 countries. It’s been very exciting to see the acceptance of our makeup in so many different cultures. Perhaps the most exciting is to see the range of our appeal in the US. From our early days in the medical community where we still remain strong, to watching our acceptance in the aesthetic world and then to celebrities and the red carpet. It’s been an interesting and rewarding journey.

What does the beauty industry look like now? It looks like an innovative place that is trying hard to learn from consumers and what they truly want from their products. The Internet has given us an opportunity that no other generation has had; the opportunity to speak to our consumers all day and every day if we wish.

Where do you see growth in the beauty industry in the future? I see the growth coming from the opportunities that are available to us now to affect real change in the skin through technologies designed to tackle specific tasks. Products can have a meaningful impact on the health of the skin and will continue to get better at it.

What are they key trends for fall, winter and holiday? We’re going back to sophistication and mystery. It’s not about letting it all hang out any more but holding something back. So, although makeup can be anything from natural to downright quirky, it has to be paired with fashion that has a certain restraint. And red lipstick is going to be huge after the consumer has grown used to bright lips because of the orange craze this summer.
