5 Ways a Haidresser Can Best Prepare Before a Photo Shoot

For MODERN's Ask the Experts section in October we asked NAHA photographers for their advice on a number of photoshoot topics. We asked Roberto Ligresti, professional beauty and fashion photographer and photographer for MODERN, what he suggests are the best ways a hairdresser can best prepare before a photo shoot to make the day a smoother experience.

“As a photographer with plenty of editorial, advertising, and NAHA experience under my belt, I’ve had the privilege to see firsthand what hairdressers can do to best prepare themselves logistically and creatively to ensure a successful shoot. Here are five things I’ve found most important in this fun, but often nerve-racking process,” says Roberto Ligresti, professional beauty and fashion photographer, and photographer for MODERN.

“Create a concrete vision. Way ahead of the shoot. Due to the costs and time constraints of hiring a collaborative team for a photo shoot, the last thing you’ll want to do on the day is second-guess your creative direction. Solidify that idea months in advance so that you have ample time to refine it as the shoot nears. Changing course last minute will cause countless issues to address.

Choose your collaborators carefully. It really does take a village to execute a beautiful shoot, so make sure everyone involved—photographer, make-up, wardrobe, manicurist, etc.—has the experience to help you get there. Research their work and make sure it meets what you aspire to create.

Communicate with your collaborators. The number one problem I see on shoots is miscommunication. Be certain, from booking up until the shoot—that everyone involved is on the same page about all aspects of the shoot. Be detailed!

Choose your subjects wisely. Book beautiful, professional models that fit your vision, and do so only within a month of the shoot. Run the selections past your photographer, as they will have valuable input that could make or break your shoot.
