It's easy to go for classic hair with a striking vintage dress like the one Taryn Manning of Orange is the New Black sported at the 2014 Emmys, but Schwarzkopf Professional Brand Ambassador Michael Dueñas wanted to keep things fresh.

"I wanted to tie her dress and hair together, but also bring it into the modern age," Dueñas says. "For this reason, I went from polished waves in the front to tousled texture at the back.

EMMYS 2014: Taryn Manning's Modern Waves & Blonde FormulaGET THE COLOR

STEP 1: Use Schwarzkopf Igora Royal 7-2 with 20 volume to lift the base (natural level 5) to a level 7.

STEP 2: Use Igora Viviance level 7 and paint unevenly from root to 1.5 inches from the scalp to simulate a grown-out look.

STEP 3: Lift ends with Blondme Lightening Powder and tone with Blondme Caramel toner.

GET THE STYLE

STEP 1: On damp hair, apply two golf-ball sizes of OSiS+ Grip. Spritz OSiS+ Session Label Flexible Hold Hairspray to the roots and blow dry with a vent brush, focusing on adding volume to roots.

STEP 2: Create a deep side part just past the mid-eyebrow. Starting with the heavy side of the head, take 1-inch sections from the crown to hairline and split that into 1-inch sections.

STEP 3: Using a 1/2-inch curling iron, curl each section toward the face and pin until cool. Continue from behind the ear and move forward, curling and pinning hair in place.

STEP 4: On the lighter side of the head, take 1-inch sections from just behind the ear and hold the iron horizontal, curling the entire section at once away from the face. Work from teh part down until you have curled all the hair.

STEP 5: For the back of the head, take 2-inch sections in a brick-lay pattern and curl each section vertically in different directions.

STEP 6: Use a wide-tooth comb to rake out the curls in the front and form them into a wave. Brush out the rest of the head with your fingers and touch up with a Mason Pearson brush.

STEP 7: Finish with OSiS+ Session Label Strong Hold Hairspray.
