Nicole Richie went for a dramatic hair
change recently, going from long brunette
locks to a rich, honey blonde bob. Joico celebrity
colorist George Papanikolas was
responsible for the shade transformation.
About the client: “She wanted a big change in both style and color,” says Papanikolas, who also made Richie brunette. “Nicole is pretty versatile. She looks good with blonde or dark hair, and she likes to have fun with hair color. She’s got a lot of warmth in her eyes, so I chose more of a golden blonde.”
How he did it: The first step, he says, is to strengthen the hair as much as possible before removing the dark color. He first treated her hair with Joico K-Pak Deep Penetration Reconstructor. He then lightened Richie’s locks to a light golden blonde using Joico Vero K-Pak Crème Lightener. After lightening, Papanikolas applied Joico Vero K-Pak Color 7N/ dark natural blonde to even out the color. She then returned to the salon several additional times for a series of highlighting sessions until they were both satisfied with the sunny, blonde result.
Recreate the look: “When you’re transitioning from dark to blonde, figuring out what the hair can handle has to factor in,” says Papanikolas. “If you’re going for a cool blonde, it can take a few months to get to that point since there is a lot of pigment to break through. Aiming for a golden blonde is a better place to start, then gradually go lighter and lighter over a couple of months.
