Jenilene Sunderland (Instagram: @jeni_does_ham) of the Royal Avenue Barbershop, Eugene, Oregon, graduated from beauty school less than one year ago and admits that the best part of her day "is watching a client get her self-confidence back by the end of her service."

MODERN asked Sunderland for her "Lavender to Purple Color Cascade" how-to, using Scruples Urban Shock Color Craze Purple Intense hair color. Client arrived previously colored to a dark auburn.

GET THE COLOR

STEP 1: Prelightened hair to a level 11. (Sunderland used Kenra with 30 volume after 2 previous lifting appointments.)

STEP 2: Part into 4 quadrants. ( 2 front 2 back sections.)

STEP 3: Mix a 1:1 ratio of Scruples Purple Shock Color Craze Purple Intense Haircolor and conditioner. Apply that mixture on the 2 back quadrants from the nape to 1/3 up the parting.

STEP 4: Mix 1:2 Scruples to Conditioner formula and apply to the next 1/3.

STEP 5: For the rest of the back 2 quadrants mix 1:3 Scruples to Conditioner ratio.

STEP 6: For the front 2 quadrants, mix 1:1:0.5-1 ratio of Scruples to Conditioner to Shampoo. (More shampoo gets more of a lavender color. But don’t use too much shampoo because it’ll water it down and the hair won’t be able to grab the color. You can alter the conditioner and shampoo ratio to get the desired shade.)

STEP 7: Process for 15-20 minutes.

STEP 8: Wash and style.

For different intensities, Sunderland advises: "A 1:1 ratio of Scruples Shock Craze Purple to Conditioner will still get a dark purple. I kept having to dilute it with conditioner AND shampoo to get the right lavender color. No matter how much conditioner you use, it’s still a dark purple color, not lavender. All ratios can be changed to the desired shade; just play around with it."
