Kelli Parks, student hairstylist of the year winner at NAHA 2009

MODERN SALON:What have you been up to since your big NAHA win last year?
Kelli Parks:

I have been working in Wichita, Kansas at Dream Waves, a Paul Mitchell Signature Salon. After school, I set out to learn even more, especially about different product and color lines-I have been building my skills and continuing to learn from DVDs and classes. I've also been working on building up my portfolio so I can apply to become an educator once I hit my one-year mark of being a licensed professional.

MS: How did entering and winning NAHA change you as a stylist?
KP: It gave me an appreciation for the beautiful work I see every day in magazines and other publications. It has opened up my eyes to the endless opportunities available in the beauty industry.

MS: Did your NAHA win open up any new opportunities for you?
KP: I have been offered several jobs in surrounding salons and in other states. The offers are flattering, but I still feel like I have much to learn before I make a big move again.

MS: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
KP:

I plan on being an educator for a well-known company such as Paul Mitchell Professional. I love the PM family and I want to be a part of something I believe in.
A very smart and talented woman once told me, when you share your knowledge with others, only then can it become yours.

MS: What advice do you have for students entering NAHA?
KP: If you are interested in entering NAHA, go for it! I feel like anytime you can learn and work with talented photographers, makeup artists, or anyone else, you should take it. You never know what might happen, so work hard and do your best. Always!
