MSTV: Updo and Flat Iron Tricks

By Lauren Salapatek | 08/23/2010 3:00:00 AM

On the last episode of Modern Salon TV, we treated you to a few hair tips and tricks from a few celebrity stylists and platform artists. Last time in our Beauty Buzz segment, we focused on texture and how one tool can be used to create different styles—the flat iron.

Before the Beauty Buzz segment, updo extraordinaire Martin Parsons who specializes in creating stunning special occasion looks, taught viewers how to put a finishing touch on any stylish updo. In the segment a strand of hair was sticking out of the updo. To fix this problem, he used a large bobby pin, horizontally inserted it into the hair and tucked the piece back in. According to Parsons, it’s a “miracle technique” you can teach to clients, the maid of honor or the bride on her wedding day. To see his simple technique, click here

During the Beauty Buzz segment Jason Stanton, hair stylist for Solano, showed us how he produces texture. “I don’t call it a flat iron or a straightening iron…I call it a texturizing iron,” he says. His segment goes on to show how he uses his texturizing iron to style texture into a short pixie cut.

Derek J., Celebrity stylist and platform artist for Belson, showed us a more modern way to create a full set of bouncy curls on a client’s head with a flat iron. To do this he carefully wrapped 2-3 inches of hair around the barrel of the flat iron to create his style. Check out his technique.

The segment finishes off with a texturizing tip from Trent Day, celebrity stylist and platform artist of Salon Tech. To replicate his technique, wrap ¼-½ inch of hair around two carbon combs. You will wrap in a knitting like pattern, zig zagging around the combs. Once you wrap the hair, slide over with a flat iron and then gently take the finished product, tease it a little, and it will create your desired look. To see his look, click here.
