Jeffrey Paul, owner of Jeffrey Paul Restoring Beautiful Hair, Rocky River, Ohio, sees thousands of hair-addition clients every year. In this order, he says most women are looking for:
- Color enhancement
- Camouflage or coverage
Older clients were once his primary market, says Paul, now the 28 to 35 age group is bigger. Why? Women are more stressed at a younger age: “If you are predisposed to female pattern baldness, stress can accelerate the onset by 20 years.”
His preferred attachment method to add volume for women over 40 is to use adhesive strips because this hair is thinner. Younger women explore methods that suit their goals.
Paul specializes in hair replacement but not all salons can. For them, he recommends a strategic partnership with a specialty salon, in which it’s recognized that a referring salon will lose the client for at least one visit. He buys a gift certificate from the referring salon in an amount equal to the client’s monthly service fee, and asks the client to give it to a friend or colleague. This way, the referring salon regains the income in the form of a new client.
