MODERN Editor Laurel Smoke recently chatted with Farouk Shami, founder of Farouk Systems, Inc.,  about his new Houston-based facility, his most famous product and his future plans.

MODERN SALON: When and why did you first make the decision to move your manufacturing plant to Texas?
Farouk Shami: The economy is down and we need to stimulate it. We as manufacturer are part of the system and we are doing our part by giving priority to our community. That’s how we created 1,300 jobs this year.

MS: What do you see for the future growth of your new facility?
FS: I’m projecting another 1,000 jobs every year for the next five years—including research and development, electronics, purchasing, formulas, assembly lines—everything.

MS: The new manufacturing plant will help the economy with new jobs. What else do you anticipate doing at Farouk to help hairdressers during this difficult economic time?
FS: We retail in salon only and offer 30,000 classes on retailing. We also offer hairdressers environmentally friendly products—all our dryers have low electromagnetic field.

MS: Your CHI flatiron continues to be one of the industry’s hottest tools. Do you have any innovations/new products on the horizon?
FS: We have lots of innovations cooking. We will be expanding into more small appliances with environmental technology.

MS: There have been some other rumors floating around about your future plans to run for governor of the state of Texas. Do you care to comment?
FS: Where there’s smoke there’s fire. I was meeting with our congressman for the last two hours. He was coming to congratulate me because the republicans gave me entrepreneur of the year 2009, in the U.S.
