Joico International Creative Director Damien Carney spends the majority of his time on photo sets, backstage at fashion shows, and preparing celebrities for the red carpet. Now he will bring that unique perspective and experience to Materialize, his new class at Joico's stunning Artistic Institute near New York City.

In this new program, Damien leads students on a two-day journey from foundation to couture. Along the way, attendees will experience the following:

*Explore a wide variety of influences on editorial-style hair dressing, including the iconic styles and style-makers from decades past along with current trends and silhouettes in fashion, design and style.

*Exercise their creative "muscles" by learning how to source inspirational material which will inform their work and design decisions.

*Receive in-depth instruction on key fundamentals of hair design, including how to create a wide variety of modern textures and how to create hair shapes that flatter, enhance and neutralize less-than-perfect features.

*Observe demonstrations of techniques that come straight from the photo set and the catwalk, performed by Damien himself.

*Participate in comprehensive hands-on sessions, during which they will master three-to-four critical hair prep techniques which will serve as the foundations for dozens more.

*Engage in lively brainstorming sessions that encourage free-flowing, creative give and take.

*Be encouraged to compile their own personal photo "diaries" of their experience, which will serve as springboards for building confidence and skill as they move forward.

"Students will leave this intimate class with great new tools and techniques for creating hair with an editorial point of view," Damien says. "But," he adds, "that's not all... they will also be equipped with the understanding of how to source, develop and execute concepts so that they can continue to develop their own skills and talent. This program will open up their minds and give stylists fresh and exciting new perspectives on their work and possibly even their careers."
