When you’re thinking about the subtle touches found in your treatment rooms and even waiting areas, don’t dismiss the power of scent. Different aromas can transport clients to faraway places while they indulge in a massage, facial or body treatment.

Why not customize your spa treatments with specialized scents? Create a travel theme and match exotic aromas to complimentary services. Enhance a Chinese Tui Na massage with mandarin-scented oil, for example. Or make Caribbean skin-exfoliation treatments more memorable with tropical candles infused with papaya and mango aromas.

Better yet, have a selection ready for your clients to choose themselves. Encourage them to purchase the aromatherapy products used with their service to continue a relaxing, vacation-worthy experience at home.

For more ideas on combining aromatherapy with bodywork, explore the book Aromatherapy for Bodyworkers, written by Jade Shutes and Christina Weaver. The book is a great resource for spa professionals who want to learn more about integrating aromatherapy into traditional and non-traditional settings, beginning with the basics on plants, oils, quality, chemistry and safety.
