In the urban jungle of Los Angeles, Aloxxi Artist Marcy Harmon introduced sophisticated color to artfully undone hair. Inspired by imperfect, organic forms that hold great depth of color (think the glass-like shine of sun on a wet, rough rock), Harmon delivered beautiful, glossy color on richly textured hair.

“The focus was on the color and the texture was the wild side of the shoot,” says Harmon. “With smooth hair, light reflects off it but it’s tricky to get a good textured look and show off the color. Ultimately, texture in one or two spots looked the best.”

And while the theme was untamed beauty, Harmon’s disciplined approach ensured an immaculate result. “I always do a test prior to color application and I always weigh the product (color and developer) using a scale for accurate formulation and less waste. Using a timer, using a scale, all of those things matter in color because it is science.

“I used both permanent and demi, and the color was seamless on all fronts. Keep your sections clean and keep your work area tidy if you want seamless hair color. If you’re dragging it through areas it shouldn’t be—you get hot spots, you get dark ends—it’s a science and you have to pay attention.”

Harmon explained her on-set strategy for achieving picture perfect results: “I’m über technical so it’s tricky when you’re looking at something live but it doesn’t look the same way on screen. You have to be flexible. You have to look at the color, then look at it on camera, going back and forth until you work it out.”
