Long hair continues its reign this year,
but gone are the shiny, bone-straight
manes of past popularity. Stylists
are adding curls, waves, volume and
even a little frizz to lengthy tresses for
results with movement and life. Here,
four stylists from MODERN SALON’s
recent Artist Session demonstrate how
long doesn’t have to be boring.

Hair: Shirley Gordon: stylist, Strands Hair Studio in
Wheaton, Maryland; Sherri Jessee: Rusk Educator;
Cindy Wade: stylist at Cristophe at Fashion Island,
Newport Beach, California; Jose Buitron: owner,
Jose Luis Salon in Austin, Texas; Jessica Mercado:
senior stylist, Jose Luis Salon
Photography: Roberto Ligresti
Make-up: David Maderich

We used a one-inch curling iron to
set the hair in a wave pattern.
We then combed out the set and backcombed
the hair using only our fingers.

The makeup
was glamorized
with reds on
both lips and
eyes and the hair
was an amped-up
1940s-inspired shape.

I finished the look
with a soft, wavy curl.
For make-up, I chose
to make her beautiful
green eyes the focus
and enhanced them with a
deep, smoke-y shadow.

After creating my
vision board and
doing considerable
experimentation,
I let the
creativity flow at

of Maggie Mulhern,
