Andy LeCompte, celebrity stylist and Wella Professionals artist, did not just grab a black wig, plop in on Madonna's head for the Met Gala, and hope for the best. "There is so much to creating a perfect wig," he told me at a recent meeting. "I actually like to sleep in it or wear it around for a bit to stretch it out and make it more lived in." LeCompte pulled up a pix on his phone to show me how he looked in the wig that he eventually cut and restyled to complement her plaid Givenchy outfit and Casadei heels for the gala. "Make no mistake about it," he says, "it's the outfit first and then hair and make up revolve around that."

Although the wig looks black, LeCompte says it is dark brown. "Black would have looked just too dark," he says.

Here he offers the step by step to polishing up a good basic wig, and gives the details for the wig he ultimately used for Madonna.

-Take a wig which is close in shape to the desired end result.

-Wear or sleep in it to stretch it out.

-Ideally place on the client and cut to the desired shape.

-Prime hair with Wella Professionals Velvet Amplifier.

-Flat iron hair to provide sleek look.

-Finish off the look with Wella Professionals Mirror Polish for enhanced shine.
