As we all know, a good SPF is a skincare essential, but clients often struggle with finding the right formula. Here, Annet King, Director of Global Education for Dermalogica, shares how to help clients choose the perfect SPF products for their skin at every age.
20s Since oil production is still high, skin is breakout prone. You clients need an SPF formula that does not clog follicles or contribute to comedones. Client's should avoid fragrance, color, isopropyl myristate, lanolin and mineral oil. Suggest a lightweight SPF that helps to combat and treat breakout prone skin, soak up excess oil and provide a broad spectrum SPF 30. SPF needs to be worn daily and removed effectively as the eye area is the first to show signs of aging. Add an eye treatment with SPF to your client’s regimen to prevent future UVA damage like crow’s feet.
30s Recommend a tinted moisturizer. Multi benefit 3-in-1 products with either a sheer wash of color or higher coverage if needed, but also built-in hydration and a broad spectrum SPF. Customize your client's moisturizer by mixing an SPF booster. An SPF 50 booster when mixed equally, gives your clients approximately SPF 30 or above. Look for the latest olesome technology that also acts as an emulsifier, while allowing for a higher load of sunscreen ingredients, but with no irritation to the skin.
40s Signs of aging and hyper-pigmentation are more evident, so a SPF 30 or higher formula that addresses firmness, elasticity and age related triggers like ROS is a great option. Clients can layer an age fighting skin primer with peptides, pearl powder and SPF 30 over it to help combat harmful rays while smoothing lines.
50s + Skin is significantly drier and more sensitive, so a chemical SPF might not be an option. Suggest an ultra-sensitive SPF 30 that has physical sunscreen ingredients like titanium and zinc oxide, a slight tint and a built in calming complex to soothe skin. If your client's skin is very dry, recommend a dry skin moisturizer first then layer your SPF over it.
