Shelby Anderson (@shelbyandersonbeauty), a master stylist at Vichelles Salon, Washington, D.C., believes that advanced education enables a salon professional to expand as an artist and realize his or her creativity. "I have been taking advantage of education opportunities as they present themselves," she says, "from Vidal Sassoon to the NINE ZERO ONE Academy...I absolutely love doing major transformations. Seeing the 'before and afters' are incredible. I have clients who say to me, 'you’re going to take a before picture, right?' They even love seeing it!"

MODERN found one of those transformations on Instagram and contacted Anderson for the HOW TO. Here she shares:

"When my client, Stephanie, first came to me her hair was orange (something had gone wrong at a different salon). I told her from the beginning that it would take two appointments to achieve the blonde she was looking for, because, unlike celebrities, most people do not have the time or money to do that much of a change in one day. Her hair was also fairly porous from all the previous lightening, so I knew I was going to use Olaplex to help rebuild the broken bonds in her hair."

  1. Balayage with Wella Blondor lightener with 40 volume and Olaplex number 1, avoiding regrowth. "I needed to pull the orange out of her hair without getting hot roots." Continue to balayage through the mid lengths, where needed, to decrease the line of demarcation ("We want hair to grow out beautifully, no one wants to see a line.") Process to desired lift.
  2. Shampoo with UNITE Blonda Shampoo + Conditioner. Dry the hair.
  3. Highlight with Wella Blondor lightener with 30 volume and Olaplex number 1. Process according to manufacturers instructions. Rinse.
  4. Apply Wella Service and then rinse again.
  5. Tone wth Illumina 10/69 + 9/60 for five minutes.
  6. Rinse and apply Olaplex number 2 for 10 minutes. Rinse and shampoo with UNITE Blonda Shampoo + Conditioner.
  7. Dry and style the hair.

4 WEEKS LATER

  1. Highlight with Wella Blondor lightener with 30 volume and Olaplex number 1. Run lightener with 20 volume through ends, where needed. Process.
  2. Rinse the hair, apply Wella Service, rinse again.
  3. Tone with Color Touch 10/6 for five minutes.
  4. Rinse and apply Olaplex number 2 for 10 minutes. Rinse and shampoo with UNITE Blonda Shampoo + Conditioner.
  5. Dry and style the hair.

"The service took about 8 hours. Stephanie’s hair felt even better when she left my salon the second time then when she first sat down in my chair. I swear by Wella, Olaplex and UNITE. As you can tell from my steps, I always mix together a bunch of products to make sure the hair gets exactly what it needs to be in it’s utmost condition."

NOTE FROM SHELBY ANDERSON:

"I’ve grown up in this industry working side by side with my mother, Michelle," says Anderson. "She is without a doubt my role model and constant motivation to better myself."
