"Cristy wanted to keep her hair on the brunette side of the spectrum, but was tired of what she had been getting and came to us for a more modern style," says Alterna artist Brent Basore (@hair_by_brentandcarlyn) of Sherry Mesa The Salon, Palm Desert, California. "She wanted a different look without making a major change, which is something we think stylists hear a lot. Often times, guests want an update without having to get a complete overhaul. Cristy had been seeing our work on social media and decided to try something new."

Carlyn updated her color by making her brunette hair a little richer brown and adding balayage highlights. "To me her hair looked like a cool brown and I thought a golden brown would better compliment her skin tone and bring out her eyes," says Carlyn. "It lacked dimension and I knew balayage highlights were the best option for Cristy since she's a working mom who doesn't have a lot of time for maintenance."

Cristy's haircut was a grown out, rather dramatic A-line. Brent made it more modern by bringing it up to a chin length blunt cut with internal texture to create lift, fullness and movement. The idea was a cut she could easily wear two ways; smooth and straight or wavy with texture.

Formula and application:

STEP 1: Base color: Wella Koleston Perfect 6/77 20 volume. Apply all over root area and blur down into mid lengths.

STEP 2: Balayage using Wella Freelights. Starting at nape, taking triangle sections, paint the Freelights on the outer edges, sweeping more heavily onto the ends of the section to saturate.

STEP 3: Process base and Balayage all together 30 minutes, no heat.

STEP 4: Rinse and gloss at sink with Wella Color Touch 7/3 with 1.9 volume for 5-15 minutes.

STEP 5: Style with Alterna Kendi Oil and Bamboo Weightless Whipped Mouse. For the wavy style, finish with Bamboo Tousled Texture Mist and Caviar Perfect Texture Hairspray.
