Matrix Celebrity Stylist George Papanikolas picks his favorite 2014 Oscars hues and formulas for recreating them, from Kate Hudson's creamy blonde to Camilla Alves' modern ombré.

KATE HUDSON: Creamy, face-framing blonde
Natural level 6

FORMULA HOW-TOS: Kate Hudson, Portia De Rossi and More

STEP 1: Apply Matrix SOCOLOR 8A + 20 volume Matrix Cream Developer to regrowth. Process 5 minutes to base adjust and bring out the hair's warm, honey undertones.
STEP 2: Apply balayage highlights with Matrix Light Master + 40 volume Matrix Cream Developer. Color application should be fine and delicate at the base of select strands and gradually become heavier through the midlengths and ends. Highlights should also be applied roots-to-ends on select face-frame sections for bright accents.
STEP 3: Process, rinse, shampoo and condition hair with Matrix Total Results Blonde Care Shampoo and Weightless Conditioner.

 

SARA PAULSON: Chocolate-cinnamon brunette
Natural level 6
 FORMULA HOW-TOS: Kate Hudson, Portia De Rossi and More
STEP 1: Apply Matrix COLORINSIDER 1oz. 5G (5.3) + 1/2 oz. 7GC (7.34) + 20 volume COLORINSIDER Oil-Cream Developer to regrowth. Process and remove. 
STEP 2: Apply balayage highlights with Matrix Light Master + 40 volume Matrix Cream Developer. Color application should be fine and delicate at the base of select strands and gradually become heavier through the midlengths and ends. Process and remove.
STEP 3: Tone all strands with Matrix Gloss Sync 9CG + 10 volume Matrix Cream Developer.
STEP 4: Process, rinse, shampoo and condition hair with Matrix Biolage Colorcarethérapie Shampoo and Conditioner. 

 

PORTIA DE ROSSI: Vanilla accents with daring highlights
Natural level 7
 FORMULA HOW-TOS: Kate Hudson, Portia De Rossi and More
STEP 1: Using the natural color as the base, apply balayage highlights with Matrix Light Master + 40 volume Matrix Cream Developer in delicate sections throughout the interior and in heavier hairline sections for face-framing pops of color.
STEP 2: Process, rinse, shampoo and condition the hair with Biolage ExquisiteOil Micro-Oil Shampoo and Oil Crème Conditioner.

 

CAMILLA ALVES: Modern ombré with mocha highlights (as seen at Independent Spirit Awards the night prior to the Oscars)
Natural level 4
 FORMULA HOW-TOS: Kate Hudson, Portia De Rossi and More
STEP 1: Choose a handful of select strands and backcomb each one until a fine slice remains at the end. Tip: Keep highlights to a minimum on brunette shades; a little goes a long way!
STEP 2: Apply Matrix Light Master + 30 volume Matrix Cream Developer to the ends. Apply a few more highlights to the face frame area. Lift hair to the yellow-orange stage and remove the highlight formula.
STEP 3: Gloss all strands with Matrix Gloss Sync 8A + 10 volume Matrix Cream Developer.
STEP 4: Process, rinse, shampoo and condition the hair with Biolage Smooththérapie Deep Smoothing Shampoo and Deep Smoothing Conditioner.
