The team from Bamboo Salon in Staten Island with an early morning toast to their win of SALON TODAY's Total Makeover Competition.
Caryann Concilio and Amanda Intoccia, owners of Bamboo Salon in Staten Island, New York, are the winners of the first-ever SALON TODAY Total Makeover competition. By demonstrating their willingness to grow their salon to the next level in business, the mother-daughter owners beat out a large number of other salon owners to capture approximately $30,000 in prizes from sponsors Takara Belmont, STX and Keratin Complex.
Bamboo celebrates its 11th anniversary this September, and Intoccia says they’ve weathered ups and downs in business since they opened. “From the loss of staff to weathering through a troubled economy, we’ve faced the good and the bad,” she says. “We’re looking forward to the next 10 years and have started working with business coaches, as well as seeking out education on our own. We plan on taking our knowledge gained through education and applying it to all areas of business.”
The 1100-square-foot salon currently uses retails L’Oreal, Osis and Keratin Complex, and Intoccia believes a key to growth lies in ramping up retail. “We strongly recognize the importance of having a successful retail program in the salon,” she says. “We are currently working on a compensation structure that ties retail sales to commission, where stylists can earn higher commissions when they sell more retail.”
As part of the total prize package, Keratin Complex is gifting Bamboo with its full retail collection, fully stocked backbar and the full Color Therapy product portfolio, as well as a comprehensive marketing and education to help the salon team be successful. STX pledges to deliver a complete salon management system, including hardware and software. And, Takara Belmont will be giving the salon a new front desk or furniture for another designed area, along with interior design consulting services.
