The Goldwell KMS California Academy held a spectacular Grand Opening event to celebrate its new, fresh and exciting New York City location. The beautiful sun lit 2 level penthouse space, located in the heart of the Meat Packing District on Little West 12th Street, joins the brand’s growing educational network as the East Coast flagship and partner to the original Goldwell KMS California Academy Santa Monica (California) location. This 6,500 square foot complex features a stunning rooftop classroom with sweeping views of New York City’s skyline, to encourage students to draw inspiration from the famed creative hub.

Trevor Attenborough, President & General Manager, Kao Salon Division USA explains, “The New York Academy puts the creative energy of the city at the heart of the Goldwell and KMS California educational experience. Students will be encouraged to use the urban landscape that serves as the Academy’s new home as a muse to create bold, original work. We hope that our guests will be inspired to take both their craft, and their businesses, to the next level.”

Not surprisingly, New York City has become part of the new curriculum. In addition to classic and challenging classes in cut, color and design, other classes are specialized including a class titled “Passport Series”. The “Inspiration NYC” course gives students access to Global Color Master John Simpson as they explore the city’s unparalleled arts and culture scene—from world class museums, to vibrant neighborhoods, to the hottest nightlife—on guided field trips. Advanced principals of art and design will be paired with raw, experiential inspiration as attendees return to the Academy to reinterpret their New York inspiration into breathtaking styles.

For those interested in editorial fashion styling, the Academy offers, “On Set,” an essential workshop on the most in-demand, current trends of the season. Led by Global Artistic Master Dimitrios Tsioumas, this fashion forward course teaches students the fundamentals behind current trends seen in top runway and editorial photo shoots. Attendees will leave with a firm grasp of different editorial styling method, techniques, and the latest fashion concepts.

The “KMS 2014 Campaign Sessions” class brings the KMS California Campaign photo shoot to life with an advanced study of creative cutting and editorial styling. Students will have backstage access to the inspiration behind the shoot, techniques used to create the looks, insight into the inner-workings of the brand, and this year’s concept. Attendees will learn to personalize the KMS techniques to suit their own clients and express their unique individual style.

Other up coming classes include:

  • Signature Series (August 25, 26, 27, 2014): This trio of single day classes takes students on a Signature journey to discover how to put their unique mark on a distinctive hair color. With separate sessions dedicated to Redheads, Blondes, and Brunettes, each course shows how to create one-of-a-kind hair color creations to compliment each client’s individual personality. From bold reds to flaxen blondes to chocolate brunettes, each seminar provides detailed instruction for boosting creativity and expanding your business
  • Free Form Hair Painting (October 20-21, 2014): A unique “Artist Specialty” class, Goldwell Artistic Master Dimitrios Tsioumas offers his leading expertise to this seminar focused on the various approaches and methods of hair painting. Through this two-day, intensive, hands-on workshop you’ll learn the total process of creating free form hair color from developing your own unique formulations to cutting edge techniques for creating the most in-demand color trends.

In addition to paying homage to the unique cultural richness of New York, the Academy will also provide a gateway to global style. Cory Couts, President, Kao Salon Division Global elaborates saying, “The New York Academy is the latest addition to our expanding global network of Academies which allows us to bring together the very best in curriculum and educators from around the world. In addition to classes from our outstanding U.S. instructors, the New York Academy will also host guest artists from other countries to give our students exposure to global trends and techniques.”
