THE DETAILS: Formerly known as the International Chain Salon Association, the group represents leaders and senior executives from companies owning and managing two to more than 12,000 salons and/or day spas. "Based on our members' feedback, our 2008 conference focused on networking to share best practices and solve common challenges," says Paula Malloy, ISBN president and director of marketing for JCPenney Salons. "The goal of ISBN is to help everyone involved achieve their next level of success," she adds. Keynote speaker Joe Calloway presented "Becoming a Category of One," based on his best-selling book, then led an interactive workshop in "Becoming a Category of One with Your Staff" with Debra Penzone, president of Charles Penzone Salons & Day Spas in Columbus, Ohio, and "Becoming a Category of One with Your Clients" with Ron Provenzano, co-owner of Zano Salons & Day Spas in the Chicago suburbs. A variety of networking included speed meetings with sponsors; a party in the desert, sponsored by Shortcuts Software; and a golf tournament co-sponsored by Redken and Matrix. 

THE BUZZ:  Roundtables allowed members to get in-depth information on topics including How and When to Add Locations, Marketing/Promotions, Lease Negotiations and Renegotiations, How to Value Your Business, Employee Benefits and Compensation Packages, Client Acquisition and Retention Programs, Running a Cost-Effective Staff Contest, How to Managing Millennials, Franchising and Web Site Development.
