James Goins Jr., Beauty Education Champion and 15-Year NAACAS Leader

On February 10, 2015, the beauty industry lost a friend. James Spencer Goins, Jr. of Shreveport, Louisiana, passed away unexpectedly on February 10, 2015 at age 66.

After graduating from Louisiana Tech University in 1973, Goins owned several businesses before joining his family at Pat Goins Beauty School, where he eventually became the Vice President and operated six cosmetology schools in Louisiana and Arkansas. A second-generation beauty education champion and leader in his field, he was a longtime American Association of Cosmetology Shcools (AACS) board member and was later involved with the Commission for National Accrediting Association of Career Arts & Sciences (NAACAS).  In recognition of his service to the industry, he was awarded Milady’s prestigious N.F. Cigmaglia Award in 2013.

Goins is survived by his wife, Martha; daughters Leslie Dean, Lindsey Sikorski (Steve), Laura Rushing (Jason), and Lacey Chreene (Andy); grandchildren Abigail Leslie Dean, Spencer Gabriel Dean, John Robert Dean, Amelia Ruth Sikorski, and Kaylee Ann Rushing; his brother John Goins; his sister-in-law Ellyce Thomas (Bob) and nephew William Post Goins, II (Tricia) and their children Will and Sophia.

A memorial service was held February 14. His family asks that any donations be made to the American Association of Cosmetology Schools' government relations committee in his memory.
