WHAT: Aveda’s celebration of its partnership with Paris’ Madeleine Cofano Salon.
WHAT WOMEN WANT: Freud asked the question, but famed hair stylist and session artist Madeleine Cofano knows the answer. Her gem of a salon is a sanctuary where every woman gets her wish to be beautiful and special. Cofano has styled the hair of many great beauties including her good friend and first lady of France, Carla Bruni Sarkozy, and iconic French actresses Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Fanny Ardant. When she fulfilled her dream of opening a salon, Cofano selected Aveda products exclusively for the back bar and retail. All clients receive an Aveda scalp massage and Cofano hired an aromatherapist to give her signature shampoo service. Aveda has limited distribution in France and the partnership with this salon is a real coup.
BEAUTIFUL DETAILS: Madeleine Cofano Salon is located in the heart of Paris on a narrow winding street with an entrance so discreet you might miss it. The space, a former law office, was completely gutted and redesigned to accommodate Cofano’s unique furnishings, treasured decor items and a unique retail area. The display unit was made in Rome by a friend who is a movie set designer. Cofano greets every client in a private VIP room decorated in reds, corals and blues that reflect Cofano’s personal style. Clients don’t wear capes instead Cofano selects a jewel-toned Lanvin silk kimonos for each guest. No one likes the way they look getting a hair color service, so the color area is an open room with no mirrors. Color clients are shampooed in massage chairs for a service that is more spa experience than shampoo. Non-color clients are ushered downstairs to a darkened room with a twinkling vine pattern on the ceiling and imported Japanese shampoo stations for the ultimate in relaxation and luxury. The salon is spacious, but so intimate in its atmosphere that there are never more than three clients scheduled at the same time to preserve the private feel. And, this is Paris, so elegant pastries, chocolates, fresh fruit cups, coffee and teas are always available during a salon visit.
THE LAST WORD: “When I cut a client’s hair, it is like I’m cutting my own hair,” says Cofano.
