EMMYS 2014: Jon Hamm by Diana Schmidtke for American Crew

Celebrity Groomer Diana Schmidtke's excellence lies in her ability to make her male clients look impeccably groomed, always masculine, and never fussed over. For Jon Hamm's 2014 Emmy Awards appearance this evening, Schmidtke used two go-to American Crew products to provide hold for Hamm's on-hiatus hair.

"Jon is on a break, right now, so his hair is much longer than when he is shooting and his overall look is more relaxed. He also has a full-on beard," says Schmidtke, who is the author of Shortcuts, a guide to having a freelance career in the fashion and entertainment industry. "I styled him with a side part and used Alternator and Firm Hold Gel from American Crew.  I love the technology behind Alternator; it can be reactivated so easily. And while I often use paste or grooming cream on Jon, for red carpet events, I think you need to step it up and the Firm Hold Gel gives that very classic, high shine."

Saying her focus is always the long term goal of her client's hair ("The Emmys are just one night") Schmidtke kept the length in Hamm's beard and hair but cleaned up the sideburns.

Schmidtke's pre-event prep generally involves finding out the fashion choices for her clients.

"Jon is wearing a Tom Ford tux. I've had the privlege of working with Tom and I know that he is very classic and he is a man's man with his designs."

Traditionally, the Emmys are on the weekend but, this year, a Monday night show means guests will spend that much more time in the car on their way to the red carpet. "We really locked down his hair. It will hold all night."
