Anthony Cole for Sebastian at Alice and Olivia: Putting a fresh, mix-and-match twist on dressing for a dinner party, Sebastian Professional lead stylist Anthony Cole created a swept-back, "romantic with an edge" chignon for the Alice and Olivia Autumn/Winter 2012 collection shown yesterday at New York Fashion Week. It was a beauty festival backstage with a wonderfully organized area for hair, nails and make up, but it was the models’ loosely constructed chignons that was creating much of the buzz. “It's a sexy and playful look," Anthony told me. "It offers the best of all worlds. This shape perfectly complements the fashion. And to top it off, this is a fun show to be part of!"
Oribe Team at Patrik Ervell: MODERN had such a wonderful experience interviewing the Oribe Hair Care team backstage at Patrik Ervell. Specifically, our conversation with Donna Gentile, from Salon Coccole in Lake Zurich, Illinois, who told us all about her personal experience at her very first New York Fashion Week. "This is something I have strived to do for a very long time," she says. "The looks were going for are all very soft, shiny and sleek, like the fabrics in the line." Click the link above to hear from Donna all about her experiences.
Jon Reyman for Aveda at Betsey Johnson: The Betsey Johnson show during New York's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is always such a blast. Betsey makes it as fun as possible for everyone who is working the show backstage, and watching the show front of house (think cupcakes, champagne, Twizzlers, confetti, flowers, hand-drawn signs, music, everything bright colored). "This collection is really a celebration of Betsey Johnson in the '60s, so we wanted to highlight the transition from big '60s fun hair to real clean, smooth straight hair that's really healthy and young," Jon Reyman told MODERN as we interviewed him backstage. "We did two looks: one is a center part, flatironed smooth and straight. And the second is a side part wih side ponytail and a three-strand braid that's simple and clean to help complement Betsey's incredible collection." Amit Abraham for L'Oreal Professionnel at Bibhu Mohapatra: Amit Abraham is one of the funniest, most enjoyable people to hang with backstage at Fashion Week. Not only is he incredibly focused and professional, but he is a blast! Backstage at Bibhu Mohapatra, he created hair that resembled 20th Centruy Opera. Amit told us about 'The White Haired Girl', which tells the stories of the trials of Chinese peasant life and enduring spirit of love in colonial China . "All the hair is shiny and healthy...and super long." Amit straightened out that length by taking a clipper to the ends of the long ponytail for a sharp, clean and blunt edge.
Essie at Fashion Week: Neutral cream nails with a semi matte finish were the trend seen at Richard Chai's 2012 Autumn/Winter show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week. To achieve the look from the show, use two coats of essie glamour purse topped off with essie man-e-cure for a subtle matte finish. "This manicure was inspired by the gorgeous wool, cashmere clothing in Richard's collection," says Essie Weingarten. "The matte finish on the nails complimented the textures of the fabric beautifully."
