MODERN heard from celebrity colorist Jason Backe who said that this heavy highlight post caused a big reaction on Instgram. "This chunking image done by our color director Kitty Nadel (@kittyclorist) BLEW UP on social media," says Backe. "Ted [Gibson, his partner/husband] has over 50 comments and I have around 30 with several shares."

What's intersting to Backe is that  "My followers LOVE it and Ted's followers HATE it! Kitty  made it modern by doing back to back slices in foil through the top and then balayaged the midlenghts and ends. This makes the chunking disappear or blend out midway down. In the 90’s the chunks would have gone from scalp to ends. The combo of chunking and painting makes it new."

Here Nadel shares the HOW TO on her model, a natural level 5 with virgin hair:

Step 1: Balayage with L'Oreal Professionnel InfiniePlatine and 30 volume. Llift to pale yellow. Shampoo and dry the hair.

Step 2: Using the same formula, start at the front hairline and place 4 horizontal, back to back slices that were about 1/8th inch thick. Skip about 1 ½ “ back and place 5 more slices. Lift to pale yellow and shampoo.

Step 3: Gloss with #DiaLight 8N and 9 volume to neutralize unwanted tones and deliver beautiful shine.
