"My awesome client Ali is leaving in a few weeks for grad school," says Alyssa Wiener (@lysseon) of Stylin', Norwalk, Connecticut. "She needed something lower maintenance, but still exciting. We took her from her amethyst color melt which was purple and silver to a warm, 'vanilla cocoa cola' melt. We wanted something bold, but will grow in easily within the months she'll be gone." Wiener points out that the purple itself was only done 2 times, "making it pretty easy to lift out. I wouldn't suggest this type of transition for someone with blue or green hair because you'll be faced with a more difficult process. For that, I'd remove pigment first and then go in with an ombre service."

When asked to comment on the "death" of ombre designs, Wiener says "I think the ombre trend will always be in style. I have people coming in for ombres and color melts nearly everyday. It's such a versatile technique and is easily personalized for any client. Whether it's fashion colors, such as purple fading into gray (like what Ali and I did before) or her newest look, it's a flare that is low maintenance and long lasting."

Here she shares the HOW TO:

Step 1: Prepare formulas:

Formula A: Scruples True Integrity 5NW with an 1/8oz of yellow intensifier, mixed with 10 volume developer.

Formula B: Wella Blondor with Olaplex and 30 volume.

Formula C: Scruples Color Art 1oz 8G + 1oz 12V

Step 2: Start with Formula A at her regrowth. Then, taking diagonal forward sections, comb the shade down through the midshaft, making sure it's evenly saturated.

Step 3: Paint Formula B on with deep V's for a dimensional balayage look. (This whole process took about an hour.)

Step 4: Rinse and apply Formula C on damp towel dried hair, starting at the roots and then pulling through to the ends. "I didn't want the warmth from the previous purple to go away. We really liked the almost chesnut-y feel it gave the hair."

Step 5: Process for 5 minutes. Apply Olaplex step 2. Shampoo and style.

For those of you who have been asking, the previous color formula: Scruples 5VR melted into Joico Light Purple and Titanium.
