Pravana’s Beach Wave service has been generating quite the buzz—since I was in beauty school, and had just wrapped up (pun intended) my chemical theory, I figured I HAD to try it out!

The Beach Wave is a semi-permanent texture infusion that is Thio-free, color-safe, easy and fast to use. Formulated with Keratin Fusion Restructuring Serum, the Beach Wave infuses the hair with silk and human hair keratin to strengthen, protect and add shine to the new tousled 'do. Exclusive Beach Wave blocks allow for soft subtle waves that can be worn natural or styled with a curling iron for a more elegant, tighter curl.

Luckily, my friend Cathy was not only willing to get the service, she was begging for it! Just my luck!! Cathy had seen the soft waves on the red carpet and really wanted to change up her look. Cathy has dark, pretty hair, but because of how thin it is, it’s lacking body and movement. So, we both watched the Pravana webinar on how to do the Beach Wave, and then went to it!

How To: The Beach Wave

First, we washed her hair with a sulfate-free shampoo and then parted it off into three sections, two at the front and one in the back.

Then, we wrapped her whole head in the Beach Wave blocks. Seriously, these blocks are awesome. You slip the section of hair into the slit, converge the ends and slide the block to the bottom, and then wrap it up and stick the pin straight through the block—so much easier than a standard perm rod from the ‘80s. The amount of tension you apply to the wrap is the amount of curl pattern you will achieve. When Cathy and I went onto the salon floor to add the reforming lotion at the shampoo bowl, she got a LOT of attention from all the other stylists. “What is that in your hair? Is that the Beach Wave? How does it work?” Very cool.

We started the reforming lotion in the nape, the most resistant area, and applied the solution, saturating both the bottom and the top of the wave block. Then, we let it process about 15 minutes.
Virgin hair= 15–20 minutes
Color-treated hair= 10–15 minutes
Highlighted hair= Check every 3–5 minutes

Then, after rinsing for three minutes, I applied the bonding lotion and let that process for another five minutes. After rinsing, I towel-dried Cathy’s hair and applied the Keratin Fusion Restructurizing Serum, let it process for three minutes, and then rinsed it out.

Then, we applied the Beach Wave Control Mist, to keep Cathy's hair soft and supple, and voila, here she is AFTER!
